Day 11 of a new year and no blogs. gay one.
Day one, a Friday was spent feeling a tiny bit average and I don't remember a thing about the Saturday after. Sunday was up early and on the road at 9am to get to Tauranga to leave the boys in Roses care for a week with her kids. We spent a couple of hours there at this place called kulim park, the tide was out and it smelt like farts and dead fish. not nice. Seb had car sickness, and an ear infection, air that smells like farts didn't help him feel any better. We left at 3pm and drove home again, such a long way.
Kobi, Sam, James and Cole in the stink at Kulim Park, Tauranga
On Monday we prepared to leave for the realest far north for holiday times with team Telfer. Stopping in at Kaukapakapa to see Sebs friend Gerry, we made it up there in just abit over 5 hours. By now Im sick of the car. Te Ngaere Bay is 6km north of Matauri bay and is a sight to behold, truely.
Seb points at Matauri Bay
The house was organised by Sebs Aunty Marie as she knows the people who live just ahead of it, we had no idea where it was except to say the instructions read ' at the end of a long driveway'. Long is an understatement. When you have never been to a place you are filled with trepidation at the sight of a steep metal road winding round the sides of a cliff. The drive kept going and going and going until we were the actual first time ever kings of the castle at the top.
Te Ngaere dawn
Greeted by Sebs entire immediate family of 11 members (minus his brothers expartner kat and my kids would have made us a party of 16) we spent our first night in a tent on the lawn strategically placed so as to catch the first morning rays. 5.30am Seb tapped me awake and pointed out the tent door and I saw that view above.
Being that Im a wriggler which Seb hates, and he's a snorer, which I hate I lay there for another 25 minutes trying to get comfy on an uncomfy airbed till I gave up and got up. I grabbed my shoes and a blanket and went for a walk down the drive to try and catch some early morning pictures.
Te Ngaere Beach
Matt and Harry in the freezing water
Tueday - The view was outstanding, and I didn't realise till later in the day that the islands in the distance were the Cavalli's which I sailed when I was a kid. I was the lone woken person for ages before anyone else got up, first Jo and then Mike and the kids and slowly everyone else. We walked down to the beach later and then took a drive 15 minutes or so round the corner for a swim at Matauri Bay. I didn't swim, it was freezing, Im surprised ice wasn't floating in there. Seb and I cooked dinner Tuesday night for the family, Spag bol enmasse.
Te Ngaere Feet
Wednesday - more beach time, Brendan had gone to Waipapa the day before and picked up a skim board at the Warehouse. This is Seb stacking it off the board. hahahahaha.
Seb eats it.
Jo and Jan at the Rainbow Warrior Memorial
With the exception of myself, Sebs neice Shamaia and her bf Jayden, everyone else went to the Rainbow Warrior Memorial at Matauri Bay. I opted to stay behind at the house and read the stack of Vanity Fairs on the coffee table, and enjoy my first actual non-death/accident related holiday sans children in 12 years. lounging around in the sun reading about the Mamas and the Papas, and Picasso (although not in the same article, thats just weird) was definitely a highlight. Chicken for dinner and the end of Wednesday with a fierce match of Gin Rummy between myself, Seb, Matt, Jo and Mike. Seb won. Oh and prior to was a match of Cranium, note to self, playing cranium with my family is NOT like playing it with Sebs, ie Sebs family don't know how to play.
Thursday - I don't have these pictures, they are all in Jo's camera, but we rose early in the morning after Matt wangled a deal with the neighour to use their 3 kayaks. Myself, Seb, Matt and Mike went for an early kayak around the two inner harbour islands on a very calm sea, and the rest of the family joined us later in the morning. everyone had a go and enjoyed it thoroughly. I've never been kayaking before but am used to open deep water after 11 years of sailing so I wasn't bothered by the water itself just the thought of the kayak tipping over which didn't happen. Seb and I shared a tandem which defnitely helped my arms.
Mangonui goodness
In the afternoon we took a 40 minute drive to Mangonui for fish and chips, famous fish and chips by all accounts, and TOTALLY WORTH IT. the snapper might have been 5 bucks a piece but it was so so so tasty. Afterwards I suffered post-junkfood catatonia and fell asleep on nearby Cooks Beach for an hour. I awoke only so I could automaton my body back to the car and sleep all the way to Kaeo where we stopped for icecream.
We had to leave on Friday and return to Auckland, where I had to drop Seb at home and continue to Tauranga via a quick stop in Katikati to see my old tech friend Sarah. Arrived back at Roses about 6ish. Don't think I'll do that again though, the driving was too much. It was great to see the kids again after 6 days apart, nice to have big cuddles.
We drove home on Saturday at about 2pm stopping at Mums on the way, and came home to have chips and sauce and beers with Sebs friend Tim. Yesterday was Jo and Matts last day before they fly back to Sydney today so we had yummy dinner at Jan and Brendans all together to farewell them.
A pretty full first week. and now its Monday, my mother is 56 today, and Peter James wants a lift to our house in half an hour to play with Cole.....
