I've got my retard hat on. As I blew said candles out I realised I should have been taking photos. We did our bit for earth hour by turning off all the lights, computers, and gaming consoles, and sitting at the table and having fish and chips which we walked up to the shops together to get (to save turning on the car lamps and fuel emissions), by candlelight. The kids thought it very exciting and novel to begin, but after 30 minutes they started asking when the lights could go back on.
Power enables us immensley, and conversely alienates us from others. Seb and I regaled the kids with stories from our own not so distant childhoods, about not having anything in the evenings to do except telly if you were lucky, and having to actually amuse yourself. They were appalled. Imagine how horrified they were when we said telly then turned off at 11pm and didn't start again till lunch the next day. We discussed the telling of time, did maths equations, and told Kobi why grown ups talk about other grown ups. He felt this past time was stupid and annoying and he couldn't see the point in it. we told him that when he got older it would make more sense.
Despite having no lights on bar the two burning candles though I think the boys enjoyed the intimacy and a captive audience in me and Seb. I think we should have earth hour at least once a week. I need to buy more candles...
