Fashions not our strong point

Sitting in the mall yesterday with my sons, eating a soft serve cone after school, watching people, I was drawn to look at their feet.

It became obvious to me very quickly that, with the clear exception of myself and my friends (LOL), women in my town have a love affair with fucking awful shoes. Now I have no problem with concepts of requiring comfort, but if I had a dollar for every woman walked past with an ugly clump of brown leather tied to her ankle I coulda paid for all our icecreams in the whole mall.

The other day I read a blog by my friend Leon, stating what a bunch of nana's NZ women are when it comes to fashion, how underdressed we are, and frankly, he's absolutely right. One of the things I loved about living in Osaka was the care and style women bought to their wardrobes, readily able to be absorbed into the population of 7 million people. And this leads me to wonder if, in a town of only 1 million, women feel far to concious of themselves to step out of the grain.

Couple that with a vast supply of generic 'mall' stores, Cotton On, Just Jeans, Jay Jays, Cue, etc etc, its almost impossible to look stylish and individualistic. Plus we love to tear down those who don't look as we do. I once got on a train in Osaka with a girl wearing Gucci gumboots. 12 years later... 12 fucking years, and NZ has designer gumboots, but noone would be seen dead wearing them in the street. Retarded I say.

I can only hope NZ women get some balls, shed their ugly footwear and start to care abit more.
