you just can't.
there is a blog I've been made aware of in recent weeks in which a woman self describes as a 'Welfare Commentator' and recently wrote a report on 'Welfare and Maori'. I'm to beleive this woman has no formal academic training on the subject, in fact no formal training whatsoever in any discipline to do with Welfare be it economics, social work, education, social sciences bla bla ba. She self styles as an 'observer' but gets commissioned by the business roundtable to write reports on Welfare and an ethnic group shes not even a member of.
What she does do is go on ALOT using implicit language to describe Maori people as lazy welfare bludgers who don't self determine because Socialism and the institute of Welfare has killed any incentive to get a job. This despite the the welfare state in NZ being incredibly financially punitive and invasive to one's privacy and dignity. She also doesn't state that a huge percentile of those on the dole stay on it less than a year, presumably because being on the dole is so bloody demoralising, and its a way to pay the bills in between losing one job and finding another. She goes on ALOT about over representation of Maori in Welfare but says nothing to the dodgy statistical practises of our government which will describe you as Maori only if you happened to state that you were Maori/English/Spanish/etc etc. If I was to state I was Maori and English on a form, that is ancestrally Maori, but culturally European, they would ignore the english bit and call me Maori.
Anyway, I recently discovered this guy: TIM WISE and man am I inspired. By the construction of his arguement and his perspective of racism are a million miles further ahead of things I think but have no ability to eloquently describe or express. So often with pinheads like this woman, they see their worldview as the norm, the natural way, she sees herself as the 'we' and Maori as the 'other'. Shes a neoliberal groupie in what looks like her 50's, blond, blue eyed and hilariously enough, talking about Maori. What the hell would she know. Where was she when my father and his siblings were bailed up in Newmarket shops by cops and accused as small children of shoplifting, where was she when my Dads been called a coon stealing jobs off white people, has she had to deal with this inherent stereotype in her pursuit of an honest living?
I can only say that as a woman yes, she probably has, but not as an ethnic group. Im just meandering now, but you guys in Sydney, even though I know you big kids were up there in Noosa, the only brown kids around, Dad did you the biggest favour taking you away and letting you be you for you, and treated like you for you without the domestic politic of being you for being a hori. I know there are other pitfalls, but yeah....
